What Is Reiki?

Reiki is one of several energy medicine therapies. Reiki translates to "Universal Life Energy".

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."

Reiki is a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. The intent of this technique is to raise the amount of ki in and around the client, heal pathways for ki, and reduce negative energies. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

Reiki is Spirit guided, and is innately connected and in communication with the needs of the recipient. This means that the practitioner, who is only the conduit for this energy, is not attached to any particular outcome; she has to get out of wanting to do, and into surrender and allowing.

This ancient healing system was practiced in Tibet more than 3000 years ago and was re-discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in April of 1921. He meditated and prayed for three weeks on Mt. Kurama when he received the power to heal with Reiki. Reiki came to the Western World in the 1930s and has been growing in popularity ever since.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) now recognizes Reiki as a form of Energy Medicine within the field of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). Reiki is one of the fastest growing forms of Energy Medicine around the world.
